- Research
- XIX Commonwealth Forestry Conference was organized in the FRI during 3-7 April, 2017. About 700 delegates from about 39 commonwealth countries and other parts of the world participated in the conference. Initial discussions were held with various organizations like Canadian Forest Service; Forestry Commission, England; Institute of Foresters of Australia; University of British Columbia; IUFRO, CIFOR, FAO, Duchy of Cornwall; University of Toronto; FSI etc. This is being further pursued with all these world organizations for future collaboration in the field of forestry research, education and extension.
- The Forest Research Institute, Dehradun has developed Ten(10) high yielding varieties of Melia dubia Cav. and three(03) varieties of Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm. The average productivity of released cultivars of Melia was reported to be 34.57 m3ha-1yr-1 against the present of productivity level of 12-14 m3ha-1yr-1 unimproved varieties. The average productivity of released clones of Eucalyptus was recorded to be 19.44 m3ha-1yr-1 against present productivity of about 5-7 m3ha-1yr-1 of unimproved plantations.
- The Institute has prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for undertaking Forestry Interventions along the river Ganga and its major tributaries for maintaining continuous and clean flow of water in the river which was released in March 2016 by FRI, Dehradun and NMCG, Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, wherein Plantations And Other Forestry Intervention on about 6000 sites along five Km on both sides of river Ganga and two Km on both sides of major tributaries of River Ganga identified by the Forest Departments of five participating States viz., Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal were proposed. This is being implemented by NMCG through these five participating states.
- Under the Bamboo Task Special Group (BTSG) funded research programme, 357 superior clumps of ten selected bamboo species have been identified across five ICFRE institutes through genetic evaluation and multi-trait selection for mass multiplication of the species.
- A patent has been filed by the Institute for “a process for obtaining Phytoecdysteroids from weeds of Amaranthaceae for the synchronized maturation of mulberry silkworm”.
- The Ecological Restoration Models in Coal mined areas of Bharat Coking Limited, Dhanbad has been developed by Forest Research Institute, Dehradun. The model elaborates the entire process of assessment of site condition, application of soil moisture conservation measures, selection of plant species depending on climatic and edaphic condition, planting of these species applying various means subject to the applicability to the site, monitoring of growth of planted species, assessment of soil quality amelioration and enhancement of biodiversity as a result of ecological restoration.
- Conservation of heritage trees has been done for TaProhm Semreep Temple of Combodia, Bodhivriksha at Bodhgaya (Bihar) and Vatvriksha at Jyotisar (Haryana) in which health status of the trees was monitored and treatments was given accordingly. Besides this advisory for protection from insect pests and diseases and boosting their growth was also given.
- A project entitled “Identification of the extent of forest lands in the forest fringe villages” and funded by National Rainfed Area Authority (NRAA) has been completed recently. The project broadly covered the socio-economic status, ecological status of the 1, 39, 525 forest fringe villages of 275 Districts in 27 Indian States and 1 Union Territory. The Project Completion Report has been submitted to the funding agency. The database of the project would be extremely useful for planning the developmental schemes in future for these areas by MoRD, MoAC and MoEF&CC.
- Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun has successfully implemented the pilot project landscapes of Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Karnataka in collaboration with USAID Forest PLUS. The pilot project focused on adaptive management of forests and recommended strengthening joint forest management and sustainable land and ecosystem management (SLEM) approach besides adoption of appropriate silviculture treatments, incorporation of opportunities for developing alternative livelihood generation and promoting micro enterprises, encouragement for trees outside forests, effective fire management, management of invasive species, afforestation and regeneration, pest management. FRI has provided all deliverables to USAID Forest PLUS as envisaged and accepted by the Forest PLUS.
