Introduction:
Forest Research Centre for Eco-Rehabilitation (FRC-ER), Allahabad was established in October 1992 as an advanced Centre under the umbrella of ICFRE, Dehradun. Presently, it is a centre of Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun. The Centre aims to nurture and cultivate professional excellence in the field of social forestry and Eco-rehabilitation in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Mandate:
1- To undertake focused research on rehabil-itation of degraded ecosystems and difficult /stress sites and promotion of Agro-forestry.
2- To disseminate available technologies/processes/tools to user groups for conservation and sustainable use of forest resources.
3- To support the lead institute in research education and extension in the area of jurisdiction.
Core Research Areas:
The centre aims to nurture and cultivate professional excellence in the field of social forestry and eco-rehabilitation in Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Thrust Areas:
1- Development of suitable technological packages for afforestation of stress sites.
2- Development and demonstration of site-specific social, farm and agro forestry models to ensure enhanced and sustained productivity.
3- Standardization of seed, nursery and plantation techniques of indigenous tree and medicinal plant species.
4- Identification, selection, demarcation and management of seed stands/seed production areas of priority tree species for qualitatively improved seeds for plantation.
5- Development of growth and yield models for species of commercial and regional importance.
6- Assessment of suitable species/clones/provenances of promising tree species for agroforestry in different agro-climatic zones.
7- Evaluation of indigenous tree Species for reclamation of salt affected lands in agro-climatic zones of Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
8- Development and strengthening of research extension linkages to disseminate the research results in a user-friendly way to end-users viz. NGO, Farmers, Foresters, academicians etc.
9- Resource survey and conservation rare, endangered and threatened species of the region.
10- To enhance the outreach of research findings for livelihood generation and bringing benefits to the communities.

1- Research
The institute has made noteworthy R & D contribution on various aspects in forestry sector, which are briefly enlisted below:
1- Establishment of SPA and SSPA of Dalbergia sissoo in Campierganj, Gorakhpur forest division and SSPA of Acacia nilotica and CSO of D. sissoo in Gonda and Mathura forest division.
2- Development of the technology of mound plantation with soil amendments for Terminalia arjuna, Acacia nilotica, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Prosopis juliflora and Dalbergia sissoo for reclamation of water logged sodic sites.
3- Development of medicinal plants based agroforestry models to utilize the vacant land under tree orchards of Mango, Aonla, Mahua and Bamboo for additional income to the farmers in Kaushambi district of Eastern UP.
4- Restoration of stone mining area in Vindhyan region through microbial technology.
5- Development of technological packages for rehabilitation of silica mining sites with Pongamia pinnata, Albizia lebbeck, Azadirachta indica, Madhuca longifolia and Pithecellobium dulce.
6- Phytoremediation of water logged wastelands through bio-drainage and soil amendments.
7- Reclamation of salt affected lands in Pratapgarh, Prayagraj and Gorakhpur districts with indigenous tree species.
8- Identification of promising cyanobacterial species for bioremediation of Red mud (Bauxite residue).
9- Promoting linkages among tree growers and traders for efficient marketing of wood products in Eastern U.P.
10- Documentation of floral and faunal diversity around Meja Thermal Power Plant of NTPC to identify threatened, nationally, regionally, or locally significant species and communities.
11- Development of methodology for productivity assessment for Butea monosperma in degraded forests of Shankargarh, Allahabad.
12- Development of a noval innovative technique for quick and economical germination of Spondias pinnata without any potting media.
13- Standardization of nursery techniques of Buchnania lanzan using seed pretreatments.
14- Standardization of seed germination protocol and seed source screening for Stereospermum suaveolens- a rare and neglected species of Eastern UP.
15- Analysis of demand -supply gap of important tree species of UP in Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Basti and Deoria districts.
16- Preparation of database for timber market information system for stream lining of existing marketing channel of important tree products, viz. timber and firewood for local farmers/ villagers and its extension in identified districts viz. Prayagraj, Sonbhadra, Raebareilly, Barabanki, Gorakhpur and Bahraich for developing agro forestry in the region of Eastern UP.
17- Designing of portable low cost, mini non-mist propagation chamber which can be a substitute to Forest Department/farmers for rooting of cuttings irrespective of season avoiding costly mist propagation set up.
18- Preparation of herbal Gulal using Curcuma longa rhizome, Beta vulgaris roots, Bixa orellana seeds and Lawsonia inermis leaves.
19- Evolution of nursery techniques of Ficus religiosa, F. benghalensis, F. glomerata and F. lacor.
20- Assessment of suitable clones of eucalyptus and poplar for Eastern UP.
21- Preparation of DPR for rejuvenation of Ganga and Yamuna rivers in UP.
22- Standardization of technology for planting of tall for selected forestry species of Eastern UP.
23- Investigations on large scale Sal mortality in Gorakhpur.

1- Capacity building of farmers, SFD officials and staff, NGOs etc.
2- Organization of Kisan Melas at Prayagraj, Kaushambi, Varanasi, Mirzapur, Gorakhpur and Raibareilly
3- Showcasing of ICFRE research activity and technologies to pilgrims and other stakeholders in Mahakumbh, Kumbh and Magh Melas in Prayagraj
4- Brain storming sessions in Pryagraj, Mirzapur and Sonbhadra districts to study the impact of mining policies on rural population, affected with mining
3- Education
The Centre provides graduate and post-graduate summer academic trainings to university students of forestry, molecular biology, soil science, biotechnology, vocational trainings to artisans and farmers for skill up-gradation and livelihood enhancement and orientation and refresher trainings to officers and staff of forest departments
